Dracula puts Jonathon into a trance
Scene analysis specific to: Jonathon
Summary:
Dracula uses Renfield as a distraction for the other characters while h manipulates Harker by putting him into a trance so that he is unable to help Mina when Dracula forces her to drink his blood. While Harker is in this trance, he is incapable of helping Mina and Mina is left helpless to suffer from the evils that Dracula is pursuing.
Why it matters:
Dracula uses his manipulation over Harker to show who is in control, and who has the power. However, Dracula doesn't have a soul which makes him the lesser man over good and soulful people which is why Harker is able to eventually overcome the trance. This scene portrays Stoker's societal ideas because when Harker doesn't become the greater person and overcome evil, the others instead have to rush in and save Mina, representing that Harker cannot be the greater man by himself.
