Mina reads Jonathon's journal
Scene analysis specific to: Mina
Summary:
When Mina and Harker first get married, Mina promises that she will not open and read the horrors within Harker's journal unless it is absolutely necessary. But when Harker becomes convinced that he saw Dracula in London, she worries that she must read his journal and does so with the intent of figuring out how she could help him through his sufferings.
Why it matters:
This scene is very important for Mina because it is a representation of the love she feels for Harker which is unknown for the time period. Society at this time woudl believe that Mina would read Harker's journal for selfish reasons because she was worthless; however, in this scene it is pivotal that Mina read it with the intentions of helping her husband because if she hadn't Dracula's soul wouldn't ever be able to be freed from the isolation it was in and Dracula would continue to be an evil figure in soceity. However, this scene was also used as a moment when Mina lost her innocence, and had a powerful initiation that gave her the ability to eventually determine how Dracula was going to be defeated.
