Historical Vampires
-vampires have "existed" since 1726 -Arnold Paole was the first "vampire" -Paole was a military man thought to have been plagued by a vampire - Paole claimed to have rid himself of the vampire plague through ritual, however, after his death many more consecutive deaths followed and suspicion arose - After Paole died, medics dug up his body due to suspicion and found his body all puffed up, as well as blood coming from Paole's mouth, ears, and nose. After discovering Paole this way, he was confirmed a vampire. - Countess Elizabeth Bathory de Escsed - 1560-1641 - Slovakian Royalty - Believed that bathing in the blood of others would make her young, which her husband fully supported - She tortured and killed over 600 young women so that she could bathe in their blood - Vlad Dracula III (allusion to Dracula) - Transylvanian ruler, 1431-1476 - Imprisoned at the age of 11 where he watched his family be tortured by the Turks - Grew to hate the Turks and wanted revenge - Killed 40-100,000 people personally - He was especially famous for staking people |
Vampires in Novels
- Superstition and Culture -mostly Eastern European - "The Vampyre" novel (1819) - John Polidor with Mary Shelley when they wrote Ghost stories during a bad storm (Frankenstein came from this as well) - Polidor was the first to give vampires "rules" to follow and also character. For example, they have to be invited in somewhere, something else is involved in a persons change from human to vampire (more than just being bit), etc. - Short Stories and Poems - "Carmilla", 1871 by Sheridan Le Fanu -based on Elizabeth Bathory -about female vampires attacking and feeding on other females -These vampires have to hunt for a tomb to destroy the main vampire |
